What ownership does not control
Editorial decisions. Owners, sponsors, advertisers, and fee-paying authors do not influence whether a manuscript is published.
The Institutional Review Board. No director may sit on it, vote on it, or overturn it. All four are active investigators whose protocols come before it.
Appeals and complaints. No one decides an appeal against their own decision, or a complaint about their own conduct.
Each of these constrains us. That is what makes them worth writing down.
